State route 289 runs along the Schorgast Valley in the upper Franconian district of Kulmbach. At the level of the village of Untersteinach a bypass was created, 550 meters of which incorporates the Schorgast Valley bridge. Civil engineering firms BPR Dr. Schapertoens Consult GmbH and SRP Schneider & Partner won the 2010 competition in partnership with SBR Schultz-Brauns & Reinhart Architekten. They selected a multi-span cable-stayed bridge to extend in a wide arc across the Schorgast flood plain. At the awards ceremony, the jury praised the structurally and visually impressive form for its self-confident appearance, its harmony, transparency and significance. With its one-sided suspension and six internally radiating pylons the structure creates a strong optical statement, as well as offering a convincing contribution to the local Baukultur. The bridge opened to traffic in 2020.
